Day 1 of my road trip across the USA brought me to my favorite city in Florida, St. Augustine; the oldest city in the country, and easily one of the most beautiful.

Hidden away in the marshes of St. Augustine is one of the most important sites in American history: the first free community of ex-slaves, founded in 1738 and called Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose or Fort Mose (pronounced Moh-Say). Fort Mose played an extremely important role in the development of colonial North America.

As early as 1687, the Spanish government had begun to offer asylum to slaves who managed to escape from British colonies (the first Underground Railroad ran SOUTH to Florida from the colonies!). In 1693, the Spanish Crown officially proclaimed that runaways would find freedom in Florida, in return for converting to Catholicism and a term for men of four years' military service to the Crown. In effect, Spain created a maroon settlement in Florida as a front-line defense against English attacks from the north. Spain also intended to destabilize the plantation economy of the British colonies by creating a free black community to attract slaves seeking escape and refuge from British slavery.

Fort Mose was the first free African settlement legally sanctioned in what would become the United States and had a total population of about 100. The village had a wall around it, with dwellings inside, plus a church and an earthen fort.

"Property is about a mile away from St. George Street which I consider to be the downtown historic district. Therefore, it is a car drive with a $20 parking fee or an Uber if you want to go downtown. For the same reason, I find that a major hotel brand with its own parking lot to be nickel and diming guests to pay a nightly parking fee which also happens to be $20. But I guess that's a cost to figure into a travel budget to a tourist destination nowadays. Other than that, hotel was spotless, breakfast was good, and staff were super friendly and accommodating. "

"I booked this hotel going on other reviews,but was disappointed when we arrived ,the pool and area were unkept dead planters around etc hot tub didn’t look clean . Walls paper thin could hear guest in the next room chatting will into midnight ,pictures were very deceiving .if I had not prepaid I would have changed hotels . One thing positive was the bed was comfortable "

"Staff couldn’t be more helpful. The resort is not fancy but it is reasonably priced and their location right on the beach and amenities, like chilled water on check in for guests, free laundry, excellent gift shop, cheap drinks at the tiki bar, parking and large pool make it an excellent value. "

"I did not use the pool or activity room. The Internet was unstable when I was there at night. My room was in general clean, it did need a deep cleaning like on walls and curtains. The room will benefit from a new AC unit, this one would make a loud noise, the water dripped outside by the steps, I did report that, it was a safety hazard. Lastly, at night you will hear the loud train which for me, sounded like every hour on the dot; the second night I heard it less, maybe I was pretty tired. If I would go back, yes."
