Gaze up at the remaining walls and cannons of the fort and join a game of cricket on this scenic white-sand beach.

Fort Bay Beach is a secluded and idyllic sandy stretch in the western outskirts of St. John’s. It is enclosed by picturesque cliffs adorned with tropical, verdant vegetation. Walk along the length of the beach and enjoy the tranquil ambiance and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.

Arrive at sunrise to have the beach to yourself. Admire the golden hues of the rising light reflecting on the sand and rocks. Lay down a blanket on the soft sand for a picnic or have lunch at one of the small restaurants at the two ends of the beach. Purchase some of the trinkets, including T-shirts and bracelets and chat with the friendly staff. Make use of the bathroom facilities and showers beside the restaurants.

Rent a deck chair for a day of relaxing sunbathing broken by cooling off in the warm and clear water. Splash around in the large waves. Sip the water from a coconut under an umbrella and get other snacks and drinks from the few vendors that patrol the region.

Notice the mixture of local residents and sightseers on this tranquil beach, which is away from hotels and other signs of city life. Listen to the beats of Caribbean music played by welcome bands for cruise ship passengers. Locals often organize a game of cricket or volleyball. Note that the bay is also known as Fort James Beach, in reference to the 18th-century fort at the southern end. See the fort’s powder magazine, cannons and remaining walls.

Fort Bay Beach is on the western flank of the island of Antigua, just 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) west of central St. John’s. Walk here from Blackburn Park in about 20 minutes. You can also take one of the many taxis from the town to the beach. Arrange in advance for a pick-up time for your return. Visit other landmarks in the area, including St. John’s Harbour, Runaway Bay and McKinnons Salt Pond.
