Enjoy a classic play or film beneath the pine trees and stars at this century-old outdoor theater in historic seaside Carmel.

Established in 1910, the Forest Theater Guild is one of the oldest outdoor theater’s west of the Rockies. Catch quality performances of classic productions like Hamlet or Peter Pan, or enjoy a film on the theater’s outdoor screen beneath the towering pine trees in historic, seaside Carmel.

If you’re in Carmel between May through July, don’t miss the opportunity to catch a show at the Forest Theater Guild. Since its inception, the guild has featured a classic theater repertoire, including many of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The earliest shows were partially lit by bonfires, a tradition which continues to this day. In recent years, the guild has incorporated musicals and more contemporary works into its program. The Forest Theater Guild is community theater at its very best and is testimony to Carmel’s civic pride and creativity.

Join local residents and visitors who flock to attend each year’s new production. Bring a blanket, some food and a bottle of wine and picnic beneath the stars. A snack bar serves drinks, hot coco and delicious homemade soups. Make an advance reservation to secure a seat on the theater’s dining tier where you’ll be served a sumptuous dinner accompanied by wines from local vineyards.

The theater has a Films in the Forest program. Catch a newly released feature film, a classic film or a documentary on their outdoor screen.

Visit the official website to preview the season’s program of theater, film and events. Tickets are available online or at the box office an hour before show time.

The theater is located in forest between the highway and the Pacific Ocean, so it gets very dark at sundown. The theater is a half hour walk from downtown Carmel. If driving, arrive an hour before show time as the parking lot is small. Overflow parking is available along the streets leading to the theater, but these are very windy and narrow.
