Catch the Fløibanen Funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for stunning views of Bergen. Look out across the city, mountain and beautiful fjords.
The funicular leaves from the center of the city, a short stroll from the TFish Market and Bryggen Wharf. Two carriages ride up and down the mountain every 15 minutes during peak times and every half hour early in the morning and late in the evenings. Buy tickets from the machines or tourist office at the base of the funicular and be whisked up the mountain in just 8 minutes.
Watch the views widen through the glass-enclosed carriages as you gain height. There are three stops along the way. Ride to the top at 1,050 feet (320 meters) above sea level.
The best place to enjoy the panorama is from the observation deck that offers uninterrupted views and enough room to take photographs without other tourists in the shot. Look for distinctive landmarks such as the historic wharf and count the seven mountains that surround Bergen. Come at night to admire the sparkle of city lights.
Continue to enjoy the views with a drink in hand at the café or restaurant. A kiosk sells supplies such as soft drinks, ice creams and candy. Buy souvenirs from the gift shop.
Bring comfortable walking shoes and take one of the hiking trails that lead from the top of the funicular. There are lakes and forests in the surrounding picturesque countryside. Save the cost of a return ticket and walk back down the mountain into Bergen. The easy 30-minute stroll is well signposted.
The base of the Fløibanen Funicular is located 492 feet (150 meters) from the Fish Market. It’s open every day and year-round. There’s no need to book tickets in advance.
Purchase a family pass for significant discounts on the ticket price. If you have a Bergen Card you can get a free ride in the low-season and half-price tickets during summer. Purchase the discount tourist pass from the Visitors Center near the fish market. The funicular is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
