Considered the ultimate viewpoint in the city, Stockholm’s Balcony extends across its scenic water channels and islands.

Providing some of the most iconic and picturesque views in Stockholm is the Fjällgatan Scenic Lookout, a clifftop viewing deck on the southern shore of Mälaren Lake. It has a popular café, where you can drink a hot beverage, while appreciating the stunning panorama of Sweden’s capital. Bring your binoculars to pick out your favorite attractions in Stockholm from this lakeside vantage point.

When you arrive in the Fjällgatan area, make sure to get a closer look at the historic wooden buildings here. Many of them remain entirely preserved from their construction in the 18th century. Continue through the neighboring districts of Mäster Mikaels Gata, Fiskargatan and Södra Teatern for more of these architectural treasures from the 1700s.

Approach the lookout point and gaze beyond the railings to see Stockholm’s greatest attractions stretched out before you. Your view incorporates most of the city center, with the Gamla Stan and Skeppsholmen districts in the foreground. Watch ferries large and small sailing across the surface of Mälaren Lake below the viewing deck.

Relax on one of the benches that are lined by floral displays and read a book on this enchanting hilltop. Chat with the locals in the café about the location of the city’s landmarks in front of you. From the back of the lookout rises the elegant façade of the Ersta hospital.

On a somewhat macabre tone, it is believed that the site was once known as Gallows Hill and used for executions. Imagine joining other city residents looking up from the rest of the city center to see the executed bodies on display.

Fjällgatan Scenic Lookout stands on the southern side of the water passages that run through central Stockholm. It is on the northern edge of the Södermalm district. Ride a bus to one of the surrounding stops or take the ferry to the Stockholm Tegelvikshamnen port. While here, check out the Örhänget Gallery, the Fotografiska museum and the Katarina Church.
