In the well-known region of Italy called Le Marche, this popular seaside town is a perfect spot to appreciate Italian history and art.

Fano is a commune in the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino (Province of Pesaro and Urbino). It’s located next to the River Metauro and is a fantastic central point for exploring many other Italian cities. Travel to this charming town in the north of Le Marche, the region where the finest Italian footwear is manufactured, and learn about its rich history, art and traditions.

In the historic center discover one of Fano’s most famous constructions, the Arco d'Augusto (Arch of Augustus), which dates back to Roman times. It’s located at the entrance to the city. This fantastic triumphal arch has three vaults and was once the main entry of a Roman colonia, a military camp that Romans established in a conquered territory. The gate was built by order of the Emperor Augustus, the military leader who became the first emperor of the Roman Empire, and commemorates the victory of the powerful Roman Army during the Battle of Metauro. Take photos of this historic building and admire its arches constructed with blocks of pietra d'Istria (Istrian stone).

While touring Fano, see examples of its artworks. Stop at the Museo Archeologico e Pinacoteca del Palazzo Malatestiano di Fano (Archeological Museum and Art Gallery) inside the Malatestiano Palace. Find masterpieces from the 14th and 15th centuries and altarpieces by Michele Giambono and Giovanni Santi. Step into the famous Chiesa di San Francesco (Church of San Francesco) to see the Tombs of the Malatesta, the neo-Gothic tombs of powerful rulers of Fano. Discover the Pinacoteca San Domenico and admire its numerous religious paintings and altarpieces.

Get to Fano and move around the area easily, as the town is linked by good roads and a rail network. The Aeroporto delle Marche (Marche Airport), formerly known as Raffaello Sanzio Airport, is about 28 miles (45 kilometers) from Fano. You’ll find daily national and international flights.

Visit Fano in Le Marche region and enjoy a charming Italian town full of beauty and art.
