If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday, why not choose a weekend getaway to Faaborg or even a longer trip, to the town and surrounding area, both offer many great experiences. Faaborg Bay itself has much to offer and the idyllic town centre holds many treasures, too.
Funen is surrounded by about 90 small islands, and most of them are located in the Sydfynske Øhav (South Funen Archipelago) close to Faaborg. You can take a sailing trip and visit some of the islands, for example Ærø, a much-loved destination with good beaches and beautiful old towns and houses. When you travel to Faaborg, you can also visit some of the smaller islands, like Avernakø, Bjørnø and Lyø, where both the sailing trip and the island itself are experiences. Buy an "island-hopping" ticket that lets you use the ferries at your leisure and get around the various islands.
Faaborg is an old market town, which has preserved its old character with small idyllic houses, streets and alleys. In the small streets you will find many museums worth spending your time at, such as the Faaborg Museum, which exhibits local art and works by Funen painters. The building is an experience in itself, with mosaic floors and many small hallways and rooms to explore. Bring your children, too, who´ll enjoy the art treasure hunts and the fun labyrinths hidden in some of the gorgeous mosaic floors.
Also visit the Faaborg Klokketårn (Faaborg Belfry), which is a part of Saint Nicolas Church which was built in 1250. Have a look at the fascinating medieval building and walk to the very top, where you can enjoy a superb view over Faaborg and the South Funen Archipelago. When travelling around town, you will also see the Vesterport (West Gate), the last remaining part of the town’s medieval fortifications. If you travel to Faaborg in the summer, you must visit the newly-built Faaborg Havnebad (Faaborg Harbour Bath) where both adults and children can swim in deep or shallow waters.
If you want to travel to Faaborg, consider catching a flight from Edinburgh to Hans Christian Andersen Airport near Odense. From here, hail a taxi or rent a car to Faaborg on the southwest coast. It’ll take less than an hour to reach your destination. Also, you can take bus 151 from the city of Odense to get to the town. Alternatively, travel from London, Manchester or Birmingham to Copenhagen Airport which operates flights to and from a wider range of cities, but be prepared to travel over 2 hours to Faaborg from here.
In the idyllic town of Faaborg, you can choose from a variety of activities to help you unwind. Enjoy your stay in Faaborg and the relaxing experiences it offers for both young and old.
