Eastern Promenade

Eastern Promenade which includes a bay or harbor and general coastal views as well as a small group of people

Built on an old rail corridor along the easternmost portion of Portland’s peninsula, this waterfront trail offers stunning views of the harbor and Atlantic Ocean.

Enjoy some of the most spectacular views in Portland from Eastern Promenade. The 68-acre (27-hectare) park was designed in 1905 by the Olmsted Brothers, the landscape firm behind New York's Central Park and the Boston Common. With its trail, beach, picnic areas and play areas, Eastern Promenade offers recreation opportunities in every season.

Walk, run or bike along the Eastern Promenade Trail. The 2-mile (3-kilometer) trail, which is built along an old rail corridor, winds along the coast above East End Beach. Follow it all the way to downtown Portland. The well-maintained trail is generally flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels.

Explore Fort Allen Park, located at the eastern end of the promenade. Wander around the remnants of Fort Allen, which protected the area during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Nearby, check out the granite bench honoring the Union Army in the American Civil War. See the mast of the USS Portland, a cruiser that served in the Pacific during World War II.

Head to East End Beach, which is located off Eastern Promenade and Cutter Street. Go swimming or kayaking or simply relax on the beach and enjoy views of Casco Bay.

Between basketball and tennis courts, baseball fields and a playground, Eastern Promenade offers recreation for visitors of all ages. In summertime, toss around a Frisbee in the fields or enjoy a picnic. During snowy winters explore the peaceful white expanse on snowshoes or cross country skis.

Bring your four-legged friend to Eastern Promenade. The park is great for dogs, with an off-leash area next to East End Beach and Fort Allen Park.

Find Eastern Promenade on the east end of Portland Peninsula. The park is on the northeastern slope of Munjoy Hill. Although it is just 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from the hustle and bustle of downtown Portland, this charming neighborhood is known for its quaint seaside homes and scenic vistas.
