Eastbourne Pier

Eastbourne Pier which includes a sunset and general coastal views

Extending out from the seafront, this much-loved pier has shops, cafés, bars and restaurants.

A well-known symbol of the city, the elegant Eastbourne Pier is a lively hub of activity, particularly during the summer months when beachgoers congregate here to eat, drink and be merry. Snack on cold and creamy ice cream or steaming hot fish and chips and walk the length of the pier admiring views out across the seafront.

Few things symbolize a British seaside vacation better than a pier. Many of these structures were built along the English coast during the Victorian era. Eastbourne Pier was first opened in 1870, though the landward half was swept away in a storm just 7 years later and had to be rebuilt. The pier was damaged by fire in 1970 and again in 2014, when the structure went up in a blaze that saw much of the central domed building destroyed. Visit today to see how the pier has been partially renovated and restored.

Walk down the seafront and admire the silhouette of the pier from a distance. Its image is commonly used in postcards and tourist materials relating to Eastbourne. Note the outer pavilion at the pier’s end. This part of the original structure survived the devastating fire in 2014.

Stroll along the length of the pier, which juts out into the water. The pier is lined with shops selling souvenirs, clothes and knick-knacks, as well as traditional snacks such as rock candy. Buy an ice-cream cone to enjoy and chat with the local stallholders who will be happy to share with you stories of how the pier has changed over the years.

Stop for afternoon tea overlooking the sea and have sandwiches, scones and cakes. For something heartier, eat at one of the restaurants or buy fish and chips from a kiosk. Watch for the seagulls that dip and swoop overhead, hoping to pick up leftovers and crumbs.

Stay for sunset and witness the lights illuminating the pier as dusk turns into night.  Eastbourne Pier is free to enter, but bring along cash to purchase food, drink and souvenirs.
