Hike through verdant tropical rainforest to enjoy these beautiful cascading falls.

Dunn’s River Falls are a gorgeous natural feature where river, forest and ocean meet, perfectly embodying the wonders of the tropics. The falls are some 183 metres across and, unusually, flow directly into the sea. Bathing in the azure blue pools here is simply heavenly.

People come from far and wide to enjoy this popular spot, both locals and tourists – so make sure to arrive as early as you can if you’d prefer to avoid large groups.

The calcium in the river water leaves tiny mineral deposits as it falls onto the rocks below, creating new and often very lovely formations of travertine stone.

You can scale the rocks along the side of the falls, pausing along the way to experience some of the many sensory pools. The “massage parlour” is a particular treat here you can have your tight muscles loosened out by the percussive water falling from above. At the summit, take a break to savour both your climb and the panoramic views from the heights.

Local lore holds that this was the setting for a famous battle in 1657, called Las Chorreras, between the competing empires of Spain and England.

A picnic is an excellent option after your ascent, and there are facilities available at the falls themselves, as well as a café at the bottom if you’d prefer to pick something up after you arrive. The gift shop also hosts artists, who’ll be happy to create a unique and personal piece for you while you explore.

Dunn’s River Falls are found in Ocho Rios, and the park is open every day. The falls can take an hour to climb, so it’s best to allow a full morning or afternoon to make the most of your visit. A local guide can help you negotiate the difficult parts on the way up, and ensure your safety.
