The ancestral residence of the MacLean clan contains 800 years of history within its medieval battlements, perched on the sea cliffs above the Sound of Mull.

Explore the keep within the steadfast ramparts of Duart Castle and reveal the history of the fortress that has overlooked Mull’s eastern coastline since the 13th century. The traditional seat of the MacLean clan, Duart Castle was brought back from the brink of ruin in 1911 and beautifully restored after 160 years of abandonment. Visit this stunning medieval castle to discover the fascinating heritage of one of Scotland’s oldest clans and check out the magnificent interiors.

Walk in the castle’s imposing entry and check out the courtyard. An old rowan tree flourishes amid the ancient stonework. See the clan crest and explore the castle’s keep. You’ll find the restored banqueting hall and a collection of Edwardian staterooms. Delve into the eerie dungeons and imagine yourself as a prisoner of the MacLean clan. Informative displays reveal the fascinating stories of the clan, including battle legends and tales of romance. Less romantic is the story of Lachlan Cattanach, a clansman who took his wife for a trip to an island in the strait with the intention of leaving her to drown when the tides changed.

Stroll along the battlements and take in the panoramic views across the island and the Sound of Mull. You’ll see the small promontory of Duart Point below, which can be checked out on foot.

Take a moment to admire the ancient architecture over a cup of tea at the Duart Tearoom. Have a meal that features some of the island’s local produce or grab a souvenir at the MacLeans of Duart Gift Shop.

In the summer months, you can attend Duart Castle’s special events. Check out open-air theater, dramatic military re-enactments, music recitals and traditional performances of Scottish piping and highland dancing.

Duart Castle is located on a rocky outcrop on Mull’s northeastern coast. The castle can be visited between April and October and is open daily during the warmer months. There is an admission fee discounts apply for concession card holders and children. Catch a bus to the castle from Craignure or enjoy the pretty seaside stroll.
