Follow in the footsteps of Indiana Jones with a hike through this set of enormous red loops in a popular national park.

Double Arch is a fascinating rocky structure with a double loop that gives off an otherworldly appearance. The two arches are among the most recognizable features in Arches National Park, just outside Moab. Stand in the gaps between the two enormous loops to get a sense of their sheer size and majesty.

Follow the 0.5-mile (0.8-kilometer) Double Arch Trail that runs from the parking lot to the set of arches. Make sure to carry enough water to endure the hot afternoon in this arid setting. Explore the red and rocky Mars-like terrain beneath the arches, which have no protective guardrails or fences.

Capture photos of the larger, southern arch, with a summit of 112 feet (34 meters) high and 144 feet (44 meters) wide. Pause in the center of the arch and appreciate the excellent outlook of the surrounding countryside. The view consists of several other intriguing rock formations that rise above an otherwise flat landscape.

Expect the best views at sunrise and sunset, when the changing hues of the sky reflect off the surface of the red rocks. Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility before crowds appear.

The arches are used as a backdrop in a scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. These are pothole arches, meaning they were formed by water erosion from above, rather than from the side.

You can enter the park at any time of the year, but check the official website for the specific daily opening times. A vehicle entrance pass lasting 1 week is available for a fee. Alternatively, purchase an annual national parks pass, which authorizes entrance to more than 2,000 locations across the United States.

Find Double Arch in the southeastern section of Arches National Park. Drive north from Moab for 10 minutes to reach the park’s southern entrance and continue north to get here. Leave your car in the Double Arch parking lot. Visit nearby landmarks, such as the North Window, the Turret Arch and the Parade of Elephants.
