Savor relaxing moments or get active in the beautiful surroundings of Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, an English-style garden that dates back to the early 20th century. The attractive grounds are home to a pond, lawns, sporting facilities, a performance space, works of art and about 1,500 trees from five continents.
Stroll down paths lined by magnolias, banana, palm, cedar, lime, cypresses and many other types of trees. See the bust dedicated to Casilda Iturrizar, a rich benefactress who, in 1920, donated the land that the park stands on and after whom it is named. Among the park's other artworks are the Monument to Tonetti, dedicated to the children of Bilbao and a huge steel sculpture called New Union.
Picnic on the lawns and enjoy the spectacle of the cybernetic fountain. During public fiestas this water feature comes to life with light and sound shows. For children there is a playground with swings, a carousel and other amusements. If you are into basketball, shoot some hoops on the courts.
Go to the large pond to observe ducks, geese and other waterfowl glide across the water. These animals have given the park its nickname of the parque de los patos which translates as the park of the ducks. During the summer watch open-air concerts and theatrical performances at the pergola.
Another one of the park's standout features is the Museum of Fine Arts. Tour the three floors of this neoclassical building that’s filled with artworks from the 13th century to the present day.
Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park is open daily year-round and getting to it couldn't be easier. The popular green space is located in the central neighborhood of Indautxu, close to several bus routes and a metro station. Alternatively, drive your rental car and park for a fee in the nearby parking garages. While the park is free to enter there is an admission charge for the museum.
