Set on the top of the Hill of Friendship and surrounded by woods is the Diana Lookout Tower. The landmark structure offers some of the most wonderful panoramic views in the city. After your visit, explore the tower’s grounds which encompass hiking and cycling trails, a mini zoo and a butterfly house.
This 115-feet (35-meter) tall observation tower was built in 1914 and includes a lookout platform topped with a covered wooden gallery. To reach the tower from the town center, follow one of the well-marked trails. Alternatively, skip this 30-minute walk and ride the funicular from the station next to the Grandhotel Pupp.
Climb to the top of the tower or take the elevator up to the observation deck, 82 feet (25 meters) above the ground. From the platform, admire the dramatic views over Karlovy Vary and the surrounding area. On a clear day, the views extend up to 43 miles (70 kilometers). Look for the Ore Mountains toward the north, as well as the Doupov Mountains and Slavkov Forest toward the south and east.
When you are back down on the ground, go over to the butterfly house. There are more than 300 of the free flying insects from all over the world, including Thailand and South American rainforests. For more encounters with nature, visit the mini zoo. Children are welcome to pet the animals, which include ponies, Chinese pigs and pygmy goats.
Many visitors use the tower as a starting point for excursions into the surrounding woods. Cycle or hike along one of the challenging routes, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll back into town.
Find the Diana Lookout Tower on the hill behind the Grandhotel Pupp. Paths leading to the tower begin at the Church St. Linhart and the Bristol Sanatorium. The tower is open every day, although times vary in different seasons. Admission is free.
