If you choose to spend your holidays in Daimiel, you’ll discover a historic town whose origins date back more than 4,000 years. Proof of this is the archaeological site of Motilla del Azuer, where the oldest well in the Peninsula can be found. This excavation has revealed a number of motillas, fortified settlements from the Bronze Age that are in very good condition.
In the Daimiel county museum, housed in a typical worker’s cottage, you can go on a journey that looks at prehistoric civilisations who inhabited the area and medieval buildings right through to the inventions of the Muslim world. In one of its rooms, you’ll find the remains of a 16th century house that belonged to a family of the local nobility. There’s also an area dedicated to the reproduction of a traditional country house of La Mancha.
The oldest religious building in Daimiel is the Parish Church of Santa Maria La Mayor, a Gothic church from the 14th century. Inside is the grave of Joaquín Ibáñez Cuevas, hero from the Spanish War of Independence. Be sure to take in the capitols, thought to represent symbols related to the Knights Templar. The most striking ones include the rabbit, the siren, the immutable face and the serpent.
The town is also home to a unique type of wetland ecosystem in Spain: the Tablas de Daimiel National Park. If you want to discover the species that live there and what activities you can do, we recommend dropping by the tourist office first. Located in a restored water mill, inside you’ll see how cereals were once ground there. If you’ve found a cheap trip to Daimiel, you should make sure you visit it during your stay.
