Stop by an important religious statue of Jesus that’s more than 200 years old and surrounded by a collection of lanterns.

While exploring Cordoba city center head to the Plaza de los Capuchinos for Cristo de los Faroles, or Christ of the Lanterns. This large late 18th-century crucifix is officially known as the Christ of Atonement and Mercy but owes its more popular name to the eight lanterns that illuminate it at night.

The historical monument was commissioned by a local friar and created in 1794 by sculptor Juan Navarro León. Although it is more than 200 years old the original lanterns were replaced in 1984.

Look up at the carved stone figure of Christ which has a crown on its head to symbolize the crown of thorns given to Jesus during the moments leading up to his crucifixion. Beneath the statue, you may see flowers and candles left by people who come here to pray. Visit Cristo de los Faroles at any time of day, but the best times are from dusk onward when the lanterns are shining.

Leave the monument to explore the small plaza’s other historical attractions. Tour the 18th-century Church of Los Dolores, which is decorated with centuries-old works of art. Study the Virgen de los Dolores, or Virgin of Sorrow, a baroque sculpture from 1718. During Easter commemorations, the image is held aloft and paraded through the streets.

Investigate the Convent of Capuchinos, a 17th-century convent built on the site of a 15th-century stately home. Among the highlights are the Roman, Visigoth and Islamic capitals in the cloister. This beautiful old building is attached to the convent church of San Rafael which dates back to the 18th century.

Cristo de los Faroles and the Plaza de los Capuchinos are located in Cordoba’s center, approximately 0.7 miles (1.2 kilometers) north of the Mezquita-Catedral of Cordoba and less than a 5-minute walk south of the Palacio de la Merced. Bus stops are nearby. Alternatively, drive and park for a fee on the street or in nearby garages.
