Take photographs of yourself in front of the brightly painted candy-striped houses that line the shore behind the picturesque sandy beach.

Costa Nova Beach is a vast expanse of clean, soft sand hemmed in on one side by sand dunes and on the other side by the Atlantic Ocean. Spend a day stretched out on the sands, soaking up the relaxing atmosphere. For something more active, select from a range of water sports including sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing.

If you’re coming during summer, pack a swimsuit, as swimming is possible on this beach. Be aware that water temperatures are rather chilly. In windier weather, waves can be big, so make sure the conditions are safe before venturing into the water. Lifeguards keep watch over bathers to ensure they are safe and stay within designated zones. When you’re not swimming, simply sunbathe on the beach. Admire the views of the rolling waves or read a good book. Sun lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for rent.

For something more exhilarating, choose from a range of water sports. Bring along a surfboard to tackle the waves, sign up for a windsurfing lesson or watch as water-skiers speed around the lagoon.

Stroll along the boardwalk and look for the striking houses painted with stripes of bright blue, red, green and yellow. Standing behind the beach, facing the lagoon, these houses are known locally as “palheiros.” They once served as fishermen’s cottages before being converted into vacation homes.

Pause for coffee and a pastry at one of the waterfront cafés or restaurants. Stay around until sunset for views of the setting sun and the ocean horizon.

Find Costa Nova about 2 miles (3 kilometers) south of Barra Beach. Ride the bus from Aveiro to reach the beach. If you’re staying in Costa Nova town, the beach will be an easy walk away. The best time to visit is during summer when the weather and waters are at their warmest. Be aware that even during the summer months, the Atlantic waters can still be chilly.
