A stunning alpine location amid a network of scenic mountain trails makes this tiny village a favorite of hikers, bikers and skiers.

Escape reality in this tranquil mountain village of Collalbo, a popular winter sports hub. In summer, too, there are many outdoor wonders to discover around the area. Hike or bike the stunning Renon mountain, cool off in the public pool and ride on a historic railway line.

Collalbo is a little place of only about 1,400 residents. Nevertheless, it is the main settlement in Renon. At an elevation of well over 3,600 feet (1,100 meters), the town commands breathtaking views of its mountainous surroundings.

In the morning, enjoy the pure alpine air over coffee in the little town center before taking photos of the idyllic white St. Antonius Church. Next, set out on a hike to explore the beautiful countryside. Follow the trail leading past trickling creeks and through dramatic gorges, to the Earth Pyramids, pointed rock formations that are thousands of years old. This route is just one of many scenic options, some of which are bike-friendly.

Another way to see the surrounding area is via the Renon Narrow-Gauge Railway. Board one of the old-fashioned wooden carriages at Collalbo and ride the route to Maria Assunta, enjoying incredible views of the Dolomites as you go.

One of Collalbo’s greatest attractions in any season is the Arena Ritten, a sports hub offering different activities throughout the year. Come in summer to use the tennis courts and swim in the outdoor pool. In winter, skate on the ice rink or watch the Ritten ice hockey team play a high-energy game. For those who prefer snow-based sports, the Corno del Renon skiing area is nearby.

Visit Collalbo at different seasons to uncover the varied treasures it holds. The pure white beauty of the winter landscape comes straight from a fairy tale, while summer offers the chance to identify countless plants, insects and birds as you hike. Drive to Collalbo in about 25 minutes from the much larger city of Bolzano.
