Choeng Mun Beach extends across a variety of small bays and inlets along the north-east coast. A number of private resorts and exquisite villas are scattered in secluded locations along this portion of the coastline, forming one of the most exclusive portions of the entire island.
The actual town, situated behind the beach, is small, with most tourists electing to remain within their luxurious resorts during their stay. If the resort life is not quite for you – or at least not all the time – you can head for the main Choeng Mun Beach, where the locals go to soak up the sun. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can access the small island of Koh Fan Noi at the southern end of the beach by wading through the shallow waters separating it from the shore. However, be warned at high tide, the water level can rise to waist level and above, so plan your adventure accordingly! Like all popular beaches on Koh Samui, Choeng Mun also offers its fair share of watersports and excursions jet ski or kayak out from the beach and around Koh Fan Noi, or venture a little further out to scuba dive along the offshore coral reef.
After all that activity, you're sure to have worked up an appetite. If you're travelling as a family, this is a great part of the island for you, as most of the area's restaurants cater to a Western palate, making it easy to find food for the kids. The noticeable lack of the hostess bars so omnipresent over much of the rest of the island is an added family-friendly bonus.
Choeng Mun is very centrally located, making it the perfect base from which to explore the rest of Samui. If you want to pay your respects to the Big Buddha, it's an easy trip to the west to reach his island, while the glorious beaches of Chaweng Noi and Lamai are within easy reach, just to the south.
