Chateau de Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel Castle) stands out like a beacon on a small rocky hill in the center of medieval Neuchâtel. From the castle’s windows, enjoy the sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and lake.
Elements of the current Chateau de Neuchâtel are thought to be at least a millennium old. Accounts vary, but it is generally believed that the castle was a gift from Rudolph III of Burgundy to his wife in the year 1011. With renovations done throughout the centuries, the castle today represents an immense cultural and historical heritage.
Approach Chateau de Neuchâtel through the maze of cobbled streets and sandstone buildings in Neuchâtel’s Old Town to appreciate how it dominates the cityscape. As you climb, you start to get a view out over the city and the castle seems to grow in size. Much of the castle is still in use as government offices for the Neuchâtel Canton, making a tour the only option to explore the interior without an official appointment. Arrive on time to catch one of the English tours that introduce visitors to the castle and its history.
Whether you can enter on the day of your visit or not, you can always come here to admire the architecture of this grand building. It has thin towers, intricate stonework, high peaked roofs and colorful shutters. Spot the different coats of arms of the various counts that lived here.
Tear your gaze away from the castle to take in the superb views from its lofty position. Look across the city to see Neuchâtel Lake and beyond that the Alps. Reaching up behind the castle to the rear are the Jura Mountains. Finish your visit by exploring the Collegiate Church, which sits majestically beside the castle.
Guided visits of Chateau de Neuchâtel are possible from April to May during the afternoons at weekends and bank holidays and on all afternoons from June to September except Mondays. It is closed to visitors during the winter months. Fees apply. The castle is best reached on foot or by bus or tram, due to the city’s narrow city streets that limit car traffic.
