Nestled on the banks of the Missouri River, Chamberlain is a town where culture thrives and the great outdoors is never far away.

Hike through national parks, learn about the lives of the early residents of the area and camp beneath the stars when you visit peaceful Chamberlain.

Step back in time and experience first-hand the life of a Native American when you visit the Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center. The exhibition center features a mini theater and interactive displays that focus on both the historical life of these Plains Indians and their modern issues. Shop for local arts and crafts in the gift shop. Purchase a star quilt handmade by Lakota women.

Just outside the city, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center brings the two explorers’ epic journey through South Dakota to life. Review the panels and exhibits documenting the two men’s expedition. View the river from the bow of a replica keelboat. The center is located at the 264 mile marker along the I-90 interstate highway.

Experience the Great Plains at the Roam Free Park. Enjoy scenic walks and see an array of local wildlife along the banks of the river. To see the area through the eyes of an explorer, follow the short Lewis and Clark Trail, a scenic route alongside the river. Whatever your biking skill level, enjoy cycling along the trail.

The Missouri River is the lifeblood of the town. Find a spot at the American Creek Campground on the water’s edge for a spectacular way to experience river life. Space for tents and RVs is plentiful and facilities at the site are excellent. If you are feeling active, rent a boat or kayak and enjoy a unique view of Chamberlain and neighboring Oacoma. Swim at the riverside beach or try fishing for walleye.

For those who prefer being in the center of town, stay at one of the family-run accommodations offering excellent service. Many are within walking distance of superb local restaurants where you can refuel, ready for another day of enjoying the great outdoors.
