Central Deborah Gold Mine

For an exciting and immersive history experience, descend into Bendigo’s mineshafts and learn about the city’s rich gold-mining heritage on a guided tour.

Explore the hidden tunnels and eerie shafts of the Central Deborah Gold Mine, one of the Bendigo goldfields’ last commercial mines. Kitted with a hardhat and a miner’s lamp, you’ll be taken on an unforgettable journey through the labyrinth of mining tunnels. See where 29,865 ounces (929 kilograms) of gold was unearthed and learn about the harsh conditions experienced by the miners.

Gold was first discovered in Bendigo in 1851, but the Central Deborah Gold Mine did not begin its operations until nearly a hundred years later. Operating for 15 years between 1939 and 1954, miners worked hard under difficult conditions to dig up almost a ton of gold.

Choose from three different tour experiences at this fascinating destination. The shortest tour is the Mine Experience Tour. Over 75 minutes, you’ll be taken 200 feet (61 meters) below ground and guided through the cool, dark mineshafts. Sign up for the Underground Adventure Tour to venture deeper into the mine system and experience what it was like to work the mines during a 2.5-hour tour. In your overalls and boots, you’ll operate a drill and climb around the tunnels. Enjoy your traditional miners’ lunchbox in the Crib Room.

Descend into the deepest, darkest crevices of the Central Deborah Gold Mine for the special day-long tour. Don your hardhat, overalls, cap lamp and boots and board the miners’ cage. You’ll be taken 748 feet (228 meters) underground and your your mining boss will show you how to operate vintage mine machinery.

Back at the surface of the mine, you can spend some time exploring the displays of vintage machinery and museum exhibits. Pan for gold or climb to the top of the mine’s poppet head and be rewarded with extensive views of Bendigo. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the picnic shelters.

The Central Deborah Gold Mine is located in the city’s historic center. It can be reached within 20 minutes’ walk from the Bendigo Train Station. Metered parking is available on nearby streets. Mine tours are available daily, except for Christmas Day. Bookings are essential. Discounts are available for families, children, seniors and students.
