Casino Square

Watch people come and go on this central plaza, which is surrounded by some of the most elegant gambling venues in Europe.

Casino Square or Place du Casino is a pleasant park area surrounded by Belle Époque architecture, stylish hotels and glamorous casinos. The square occupies a prime setting in the center of Monaco. It's a short stroll away from the sea and located adjacent to the Grand Prix course. Examine the fountains, statues and famous casinos located here or simply people-watch from the legendary Café de Paris.

A long, rectangular garden space leads south to the main roundabout on the square. Wander around the area and admire the spectacular façades of the surrounding buildings. Try to identify famous people leaving or entering Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, which is a favorite celebrity hangout. Walk around at night to see the ornate buildings of the square lit up.

Gamble in style at one of the casinos that give the square its name. At the east end lies the palatial Casino Monte-Carlo, recognizable by its two turrets. This casino has American and European rooms, offering games such as blackjack and punto banco. Join a morning tour to see the extravagant gilded interior and the sumptuous opera venue, the Salle Garnier.

Venture into the neon-lit interior of the Café de Paris, which is well known for its huge selection of slot machines. The brasserie has indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy an al fresco meal here while watching crowds mill around the lively square.

Dine in style at one of the many restaurants and cafés lining the square. A variety of eating spots are available including American-style grills, laid-back coffee shops and restaurants serving freshly caught seafood.

Have a spending spree at the stores in and around the square, which sell big-name fashion labels. A cinema, several banks and a tourist office are located nearby too.

Casino Square is a 10-minute walk from the station in Monte Carlo. For high-speed thrills, visit in May when the Monaco Grand Prix is held and the city is especially busy.
