See how the affluent upper classes of Merida society used to live in the early part of the last century when you visit this grandiose home.

Go on a guided tour of Casa Montes Molina Museum, a magnificent early 20th-century mansion that has been restored to its original state. Inside are rooms filled with expensive period furniture that has been well cared for over the years.

The luxurious residence was built by Don Aurelio Portuondo y Barcelo, a prominent businessman from Cuba. It was completed around 1902. Due to the upheaval caused by the Mexican Revolution in the following decade, he sold the home to another prosperous businessman, Don Avelino. His descendants decided to open it up to the public. Learn more about the history of the stately mansion’s owners as you walk through its elegant interior.

Explore the European influenced rooms and bathrooms. Study beautiful alabaster sculptures, Murano glass lamps, ornaments, art deco pieces, paintings, rugs, glass chandeliers, mirrors and carved wooden tables. Other highlights are the Carrara marble floors and the Chiristofle silverware.

Appreciate the opulence and beauty of some of the pieces, and ask your tour guide about who bought them and when. Walk down to the basement to see the cellars, utility rooms and kitchen.

Watch open-air concerts that are occasionally held in the mansion’s gorgeous gardens. Pass by the building at night when it is even more of a stunning site bathed in the soft glow of its exterior lights.

The museum is located on Paseo Montejo, Merida’s main street, a few minutes’ walk from the historical center. If you are driving, park for a fee in the downtown lots.

Entry to the Casa Montes Molina Museum is by guided tour only. Tours have a fee and are conducted every day except Sundays when the mansion is closed. For times and prices of tours in English, visit the museum’s official website. Be sure to confirm your tour by telephone, because the museum often hosts business meetings, seminars and special events, such as weddings and graduation ceremonies.
