The Carvoeiro coastline is breathtakingly beautiful, with cliffs, caves, coves and beaches, crystal clear waters and smooth sand, attracting countless visitors throughout the year.

But it’s not only natural beauty that brings the tourists to Carvoeiro. Those looking for an active or sporty holiday come to take full advantage of its popular golf courses and water sport opportunities, like jet skiing or diving.

Book a stay in one of Carvoeiro’s low-rise luxury resorts or traditional white washed villas, which make ideal self-catered accommodation. Whatever you’re after, Carvoeiro can meet your needs.

History

The Romans are known to be the first occupants of the region, but the first recorded name of this village was “Caboiere”, which has Medieval-Arab origins. Carvoeiro also has a strong naval history. In the 16th Century it was the scene of a famous naval battle, just off Cape Carvoeiro, where the Portuguese navy defeated the Turks.

Although this village’s economy has historically been dependent on tinned tuna and sardines, the growth of tourism in the 1960’s turned it into a popular beach destination. Now its canning plants and fishing ports have been replaced with upmarket resorts and gorgeous beach areas.

Forte do Carvoeiro e Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

The 17th century Forte do Carvoeiro offers magnificent views over the beach below, but there’s plenty to keep visitors occupied inside too. Visit the small shrine, the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, which is an important place of worship for local fishermen. There’s also the portrait of the 17th Century patroness, Our Lady of the Incarnation, and a 19th Century statue of the crucifixion.

Algar Seco

Algar Seco is a spectacular rock formation which resembles windows looking over the sea. Named using the Moorish word for “grotto” (Algar) and the Portuguese for “dry” (secco), you’ll find it just east of Carvoeiro Beach.

Beaches

Cavoeiro has a great selection of beaches to choose from. Carvoeiro Beach is a beautiful shell shaped beach just in front of the main square. Praia da Marinha is one of the most iconic beaches of Portugal and is particularly popular with kids at low tide, as there are plenty of caves and rock pools to explore. The waters are crystal clear and are home to some amazing marine life, making the area perfect for snorkelling. There’s also a bar on the beach during summer serving drinks, snacks and fresh fish.

Not to be missed is the stunning Algar de Benagil, also known as the “Cathedral”, an incredible sandstone cave that shelters a secluded beach. It can be accessed by the sea. The easiest way to reach this incredible natural formation is via boat, which depart between the Alfanzina Lighthouse and Praia Nova.

Food and Drinks

Whether you want creative Mediterranean cuisine with a Portuguese twist, a casual bistro serving traditional dishes like Chicken Piri-Piri, or some of the freshest fish and seafood you’re ever likely to taste, you’ll find it here in Carvoeiro. There are also many bars and cafés to be found around the central village square and on the nearby beaches. Carvoeiro really is a foodie’s dream come true.

Shopping

The town has plenty of grocery stores and a local market to serve your everyday needs. There is also a large supermarket on the border of Carvoeiro, 7 minutes away by car, and the popular Algarve Shopping Mall at Guia is just 30 minutes away by car.
