Capoliveri is a quaint little commune perched high in the hills of Elba Island. The township is divided into four main sections. Wander around the historic ramparts of the Baluardo (the Bulwark) and take photos of the houses nestled into the valley of il Fosso (the Ditch). Gaze up at the imposing old la Torre (the Tower) and walk within the walls of la Fortezza (the Fortress). As you explore the meandering medieval alleys, you’ll find small archways known as chiassi. Check out some of Capoliveri’s historic treasures. The medieval Pisans fortified the old city against attacks by the Saracen pirates. You can see the fortified walls of the ruined San Michele Church, a Romanesque beauty dating back to the 1300s.
If you visit in September, you can experience the ancient rivalry between the town’s four districts at the Festa dell’Uva (Grape Festival). Watch as the districts go head-to-head with traditional choreographed dances and celebrations. Taste delicious wines from the revered vineyards described by the Romans as Colle di Libero, or “sacred to Bacchus.”
