Great location

Excellent location, if a bit dated in design. Comfortable with all amenities.

Dear Guest, Thank you for posting a review about us and we hope you enjoyed your stay here. Jambo is a more than 100 year old house and we decided to keep this Olde Worlde feel about it hence the "a bit dated" feel ! Thanks once again. Warm regards Barry and Mina

Book it for unique style

Posted 19 Feb 2019 on Hotels
The photos correspond to what it really is. The breakfast was tasty and fresh, but boring - every day the same and limited in options. One would for example expect better juices for that type of guesthouse. The rooms were clean and fresh. The bed pretty hard, it's a matter of taste obviously. The area is peaceful, but not much interesting around. The owners were flexible with check-in time. Not much with the breakfast. We were refused to have an earlier breakfast or packed sandwich when going to safari, while other couple had breakfast earlier. We didn't like not even treatment of all guests. The owners were kind and chatty, sometimes pushy in selling hop-on hop-off bus tickets or local services. If you have nothing organized in the trip, it might be helpful. Otherwise it might feel intrusive. Book this place if you want daily chat with the owners, if you are ready to share your day activities with others, if you want more personal treatment. Do not book if you are reserved person and prefers to be anonymous. Overall the place has ' a soul', style and much more unique design than white wall rooms in many other hotels.

Dear Guest Thank you for taking the time to post a review about us although there are a few things we would like to respond to. We enjoy meeting and interacting with our guests and breakfast time affords an opportunity for our guests to interact with each other and for us to impart some of our knowledge of the Cape. We love the interaction we have with our guests and feel that their limited time here in the Best-City-in-the-World is very precious and try to make sure that they get the best of what Cape Town has to offer. For this reason we sit down with our new arrivals with maps and give as much information as we can about where to go, where to eat, what to see, where not to go etc. and part of that is the City Sightseeing buses which we think are a wonderful way to get an overview of the city Many of our guests choose to join us in the evenings in our lounge where sometimes Barry plays guitar and sings and where often the guests join in and at other times they take over the guitar and the piano. Yes we do serve the same breakfast every day consisting of a platter of freshly cut seasonal fruits, cereals, yoghurts, stewed fruit, hard and soft cheeses, ham and salami, muffins, tea, a variety of herbal teas and freshly brewed coffee, two types of bread and two types of bread rolls, fresh from the bakery every morning. We serve two varieties of fruit juice, both 100% pure juice, no additives and not diluted so we are not quite sure what you mean by “better juices” ? Eggs are not on our everyday menu but are supplied on special request. We serve breakfast between 08.00 and 10.00. This is because the bakery where we get fresh-from-the-oven rolls every morning only opens at 07.00. Should anyone need an earlier breakfast yoghurt, cereals, coffee, tea and juice are available.

What you see is not exactly what you get......

Posted 1 Apr 2017 on Hotels
We decided to stay at Jambo for our last night in Cape Town based on the location, positive tripadvisor/hotels.com reviews and the amenities offered for the price point (~£100-£115 per night). Upon arrival, we were quite frankly disappointed and somewhat bewildered by the overwhelmingly positive reviews we had read. Jambo is not a bad place to stay at, but I do think it appeals to a certain type of audience/traveller. If you are into the quirky, bohemian, homestay, get to know your hosts vibe, then this is the place for you. We stayed in the Garden room and the decor was very dated, worn, chintzy and overwhelming (to reference one other reviewers comments, it felt like staying at your granny's house). It was comfortable at best but in no way luxurious or modern. The TV was small - almost unwatchable from the bed and had a very limited number of channels. The "free" parking was on a public cul-de-sac that was so narrow you had to reverse out of it onto a main road and the "free" wifi was not available as standard but was begrudgingly offered as "....do you need to use my wifi?" In sum, had the price been ~£50-£60 per night, we would have had no issues at all but there are other hotels and guest houses in the cape that offer better facilities for the same price. Barry and Mina were lovely but they need to invest as much in their rooms as they do into their hosting to justify the price point.

Dear Alex, Jambo is a beautiful 130 year old Victorian styled building. We prefer eclectic furnishings as we find chrome, glass and modern very cold. Had you taken the trouble to view the virtual tour on our website then you would have seen that "What you see is indeed, what you get " We have just been re-graded 4 Stars by the TGCSA. We do have some onsite free parking and Barry will gladly act as a "parking valet" if guests experience trouble with our narrow streets. WiFi is free, limitless, available throughout the property and is never "begrudgingly offered" as you stated. You have forgotten to mention the view of our beautiful garden from your bed, the bird songs plus the sheer tranquility even though we are located in the city centre. We hope you will return to enjoy more of South Africa. Regards Barry and Mina

Good location and host

Posted 27 Mar 2017 on Hotels
Jambo guest house is in a great location - in walking distance to the V&A waterfront (around 30mins) and Sea Point and there are restaurant options within a 10 minute walk. Barry, the owner, is helpful and is keen to offer advice and make bookings on behalf of guests. The guest house has a home-like feeling but was a little too cluttered for me with lots of things in the rooms - personally, I prefer more space - and more things in the room means more dust in places you cannot clean. Overall a good stay - we were out most of the day and were in the rooms only at night. If you have a back problem, you might find the beds a little uncomfortable - too soft and jumpy for me.
