Marvel at the dramatic rock formations of this spectacular canyon, a great place for picnics, scenic walks, mountain biking and rock-climbing adventures.

The Cañon de la Huasteca is rich in natural beauty: a mountain ravine of striking limestone rock formations and magnificent desert landscapes. Come here to enjoy scenic walks and picnics, superb photography opportunities and outdoor adventures. The canyon forms part of the sprawling Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey, a national park home to forest-covered valleys, mountains, waterfalls and colorful fauna and flora.

Explore this magical canyon via rented car or take a hike on one of the various walking trails, which are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Pause to gaze up at the changing rock formations, some of which are about 984 feet (300 meters) tall. Look for the ancient petroglyphs (rock engravings) left by the indigenous people that once inhabited the area. High up in one of the cliffs is a house that belonged to famed Mexican writer, scientist and humanist Dr. Eduardo Aguirre Pequeño.

At the heart of the canyon is La Huasteca Ecological Park. Find picnic areas, barbecues, a children’s playground and a natural swimming pool. It’s a popular weekend escape for residents of the nearby towns and villages.

Take advantage of opportunities to go mountain biking and rock climbing within the valley. Bike along paved and dirt trails that weave through the foothills of the soaring limestone cliffs. Discover areas that are designated for climbing and abseiling. In downtown Monterrey, you’ll find several tour operators who can provide equipment and knowledgeable guides.

Located on the northern edge of Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey, the canyon is just a 45-minute drive from downtown Monterrey. The easiest way to get here is via rented car or on a guided tour if you plan to go rock climbing and mountain biking. A public bus also operates between the canyon and downtown Monterrey.

The Cañon de la Huasteca is open daily with an admission fee for those entering with a car. The canyon has very limited facilities so bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months.
