Calgary Bay Beach featuring a sandy beach, tranquil scenes and general coastal views

Stretch out on the white sands of this idyllic beach embraced by low hills and scenic dunes, where sheep graze in nearby meadows overlooked by a castle.

Enjoy a relaxing beach day on the sheltered shores of Calgary Bay, a breathtaking beach on Mull’s western coast. Protected by the sweeping arms of the northern and southern high grounds, Calgary Bay’s tranquil shore is a beautiful spot to swim or enjoy the views. Have a picnic on the grassy meadows that line the foreshore or play in the gleaming white sand. Spot Calgary Castle or walk along the beach trails to find remnants of the township that once thrived here.

Stroll along the grassy foreshore and reach the soft sands. If the sun is shining, the waters in the bay become a brilliant blue. Pick a patch of sand and settle in for a peaceful day by the sea. Go for a swim in the sheltered waters or try to make Calgary Castle out of sand.

Walk across the broad area of machair, the grassy dune that lies between the beach and the land. You can follow a walking track that leads along the north side of the bay. In the shallow valley near the pier, you can see a collection of ruined houses and barns dating back hundreds of years. The local landlord displaced the former township of Inivea in the early 1800s so that he could graze more sheep in the area. To the southeast of the bay, you’ll find a couple of cottages and a scenic camping ground. Spot the unusual beachside residence roofed with an upturned dinghy.

Check out Calgary Castle to see the elegant castellated mansion. The elegant building presiding over the bay was built in 1817. You can also see the abandoned town’s burial ground and visit the Calgary Farmhouse and Hotel. Stop by the Carthouse Gallery and Tearoom to see artwork by local artists or have a freshly brewed pot of tea.

Calgary Bay is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Tobermory and can be reached via a winding, narrow road. The beach is free to access at any time and a parking lot is available on the foreshore. There are also public restrooms and an informal camping area at Calgary Bay Beach.
