Overpriced, needs mayor fixing and updates.
Overpriced hotel. None knew our two families were coming. Not very organized. Very basic kitchen, stove didn't work, TV didn't work, only one bathroom for two bedrooms, water flow extremely low, tasted and smelled extremely unpleasant, no lighting to walk from parking area to room ( we had to use our flashlights), gym was non operational, old, rusty, no A/C and windows broken. Pool was very nice but lights were loose (not safe). Pool beds were old and dirty (can't be used). WiFi worked randomly. Refrigerator, coffee maker and blender were nice. A/C in each room worked well. Place needs some mayor fixing up. Maintenance guy was very pleasant and nice, he came to show us a sloth that was crossing the street.

This "hotel" was the worst we took in our trip in Costa Rica. For that amount of money go to another hotel, DO NOT STAY HERE. It's away of beach, away of Puerto Viejo center, dark street, no signs to recognize there is a hotel. Is not a hotel, is a group of cabinas..

Nice place. Quiet place. We saw monkeys and frogs every day. Need car to get to the town. Yoga is relatively closed by.

Expected more
Pros: surrounded by nature, wildlife and pure air. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with full kitchens. The owner is generally nice and very involved in community and environmental affairs. Cons: the hotel is rather isolated and the road isn't very good. The beach is about 700 meters away. No air conditioning. Not very accessible to the elderly or disabled due to walkways covered with loose stones and slippery bathroom floors. Has no restaurant. Offers only breakfast which is individually prepared and then taken in turn to each room, which makes it a lengthy process. The staff is minimal.

Accesability: VERY POOR
After 25 minutes of searching for the hotel, due to the lack of clear signage, I went through A flooded creek(small) as it was pouring with rain. If you dont have a car or own transport, everytime you want to go to town, you have to get a cab at $7 for a 5 minute ride, each way. For this reason, I didnt stay. I want a refund

Not really a hotel
The VIP 'Hotel' is not really a hotel. It has no reception, bar or restaurant. It is two sets of three apartments either side of a good pool which was the best feature of the accommodation and a gym. Each apartment has a kitchenette so you're are really in self catering accommodation. It is poorly located being 1.5km down a poor quality dirt track road and quite difficult to find and realise that you have arrived when you get there. Breakfast was brought to your apartment at 8am and was not particularly good quality or the cooked part hot. We were glad to leave as this accommodation was very poor value for money.

In the middle of no where and too noisy!
I feel that the hotel is overpriced and breakfast is the worst I've had in Costa Rica, we skipped it after 2 mornings, eggs, or an omelette and some fruit served with dry bread on the side. We travel all around the world and for the money we paid, I would honestly say that it's the least value place I have ever stayed. It's situated down a very long dirt track at least 2km from civilisation. The nearest beach and hotel is the beautiful!!! banana azure hotel where he stopped for cocktails whilst watching a sloth in there tree's. The staff and owner do try to make you feel welcome and if it wasn't so remote and half the price I would not be writing this negative review. Also I have come to Costa Rica to see the wildlife, however the howling money's screamed at 4.50am every morning without fail- funny on the first morning- also just to add we never saw them!

Really nice outside of town. The owners are really nice and helped us with everything. The rooms were huge and had a full kitchen. Overall great experience just wish it was on the beach or in town.

Simply Amazing.
This hotel was truly amazing. It is hidden in the jungle which is exactly what we were looking for to get the "Costa Rican" feel. It is close to town and the beautiful beaches. Miriam is an angel and helped us set up our transportation to and from the airport and made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay a memorable one. Dilan who also works at the hotel is one of a kind. He set up all our tours and excursions for us and introduced us to awesome people throughout the trip. He made sure we were always in good hands and watched out for us. They are two very special people and we will never forget them. The hotel is very clean and offers an AWESOME complimentary breakfast every morning. We didn't get to have it one morning because we were going canopying early and we were so sad that we had to miss it. However, Miriam and Dilan made sure to put fruit and coffee in our rooms for us. This was by far one of the best vacations I have ever been on and VIP Playa Negra is the hotel to stay at when visiting Puerto Viejo. Looking up flights back right now actually =)

you can get more for the money
The hotel and management are nice enough but the details do not live up to VIP label. It is a $4 to $5 taxi ride into town and a 10 block walk to the beach. The free to use bikes have leaky tires and in some cases no breaks. I had to pay to get a tire repaired on one trip out and was not reimbursed. If they get you food or supplies from town expect to over pay. If they offer you something from their stock with a 'we can settle this later' expect to pay double the replacement cost. No soap towels or napkins for kitchen. Crumbled foam rubber pillows plastic wrapped mattresses. For far less money you can get ocean views and equal our more amenities.

Quaint and homey
We had a great time here. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was very spacious and away from the hustle of Puerto Viejo. Very easy to just grab a bike or take a bit of a walk down to Playa Negra. Great for families or couples who want to be close, but not too close to everything. Breakfast was awesome, they bring it right to your room and was delicious.

Seclusion of deep forest, walk to the beach
This is a great boutique alternative to the area hotels. You get a jungle environment just a short walk to a beautiful black sand beach. The hostess is from Spain has lived in Costa Rica for many years. She is very friendly and accommodating. I recommend this place to my family and friends, and to you, hotel.com users!

Amazing Place
It was AMAZING and outstanding place to stay - beautifull and clean rooms, tastefull plants, flowers, garden and wild nature, friendly and helpful owner, healthy morning food, convinient to the beach, big and clean pool near Puerto Viego center, all unforgetable! After visiting other hotels (Banana Azul, Negrito, Kukula, Pepito, etc.) I realized that this hotel was one of a kind and better by far in every way! I highly recommend VIP to anyone that is appreciates wild nature, comfort and grace while travelling - you will love this place!

Horror in Puerto Viajo
This hotel is not in close proximity to the beach. It is very, very remote. The property has beautiful palnts ands trees, jungle-like. No air conditioning just ceiling fans. The owner is on the premise. She is insistant that all fans and electricity be turned off as soon as you leave your room. There is some cookware but no plates or utensils to eat with. The beds are as hard as concrete. Then there is the major issue with the BUGS! Not some but and overall invasion. There are windows with glass slats that are the air flow for the rooms. They are at ceiling height. There are so many bugs, moths, mosquitos, flying roaches, beetles, etc that fly in these things there is no option but to close them. It was aweful. The shower was another experience beyond belief. Hot water for a few minutes then cold then hot then cold without ever touching a dial. The beaches in this entire area are disgusting and smell. The food is aweful and very expensive. All we saw in this area is people trying to take advantage of tourists and getting high on weed.

Nice, new hotel with complete privacy
Nice, new hotel in the Playa Negra section of Puerto Viejo. It´s not close to the beach, but it´s quiet, nice, clean, simple... It´s got a nice pool, and very comfortable suites with full kitchen, living area, balcony, two bedrooms and one bath. Very attentive host-owner. from Spain. It´s about 5 minutes by car to the centre of Puerto Viejo. Nestled in the jungle, very private, secluded. Nice overall!!
