Experience the charm of Cadzand, a small village near the Belgian border in the province of Zeeland. This seaside resort is near a long and wide beach which is great if you want to spend a day relaxing. Thanks to its location you can easily spend a day in Bruges or Terneuzen.
The village is one of the oldest settlements in the area. It used to be on an island that has since been connected to the mainland through land reclamation. The region that the village belongs to, West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, has been flooded many times over the centuries.
One of the highlights of Cadzand is the nearby beach Cadzand-Bad where you can build sandcastles with the kids in the summer or go on walks in the winter and then warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. Nature lovers will thoroughly enjoy Het Zwin, a great nature reserve just over the Belgian border which you can walk to from the beach! Back in the village you can shop and admire the beautiful Mariakerk. Visit the nearby village of IJzendijke for Het Bolwerk, a museum dedicated to the 80-year war. Bruges is just a 30-minute drive away and ideal for shopping.
You can also hire a bicycle and cycle along the coast, visit other villages or cross the border into Belgium and spend a day with the neighbours. You can hire bicycles at several places in and around Cadzand if you don't bring your own. There are also busses between Cadzand and the villages.
But the best way to get to Cadzand is by car as it makes it easier to explore the area. The nearest train station in the Netherlands is in Vlissingen. But if you do want to come by public transport, take the train to Vlissingen and then the boat to Breskens and hire a bicycle or take the bus.
This peaceful part of the country is an excellent place to recharge your batteries. Enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful part of the Netherlands.
