During your trip, be sure to visit the parish church of Santa María, with its spectacular rectangular nave adorned with paintings depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. This church has undergone a number of modifications throughout history, such as when the presbytery, sacristy and chapel of Carmen were added in the 18th century. A few decades later, it was left abandoned, until the parish priest and a group of villagers decided to reform it so it could once again serve the town.
As you stroll around Burela and the local surroundings, make sure to grab a picture with one of the beautiful hórreos, rural constructions that are very traditional in Galicia, and used as storage. Usually made from wood or stone, these isolated, rectangular structures stand on columns, and are traditionally used to store grains and other agricultural products. It’s definitely a must-see you’ll want to include in your holiday album.
