Make a wish. If you can cross the entirety of this bridge while holding your breath, it will come true.

The Bridge of Sighs is an important landmark in the quaint suburb of Barranco to the south of the city. It is said that if you can hold your breath for the length of the bridge, all your wishes will come true. There are beaches, parks and charming shops in this sleepy neighborhood. The path from the bridge leads to a cliff overlooking the sea.

Hold your breath as you cross the bridge. If you make it the whole way, make a wish. Remember to start breathing again as you follow the charming path around the park. It ultimately leads to a panoramic vista of the sea. Cross the bridge in the evening to see it lit up in a romantic glow. It is about 144-feet (44 meters) long and it is wide enough for five or six people to cross at a time.

Enjoy a picnic on a patch of grass in the picturesque area. Take photos of the natural surroundings full of trees and colorful flowers. See the statue of the Peruvian composer Chabuca Granda, who wrote a piece about the bridge. Near to the bridge there is a lively atmosphere with street performers and vendors. Amble along the neighborhood’s houses, which are of every color of the rainbow. Dine at one of the many restaurants and small cafés in the area.

Hear the touching backstory of the bridge. Legend has it that a wealthy man’s daughter was forbidden to see the man she loved because he was a street sweeper. Heartbroken, she would stand by her window and sigh within earshot of those who crossed the bridge.

The Bridge of Sighs is situated in the Barranco region of Lima. The area is known for its bohemian ambience as a hub for writers, musicians and artists.
