This 19th-century stone barn is home to Maryland's oldest commercial vineyards.

Nestled amongst the hills and valleys of north Baltimore, Boordy Vineyards, located in the Piedmont Plateau of Maryland, is a must-see for every wine buff. You can choose between booking a guided tour of the grounds, sampling or purchasing the wine there, or relaxing on the green listening to one of the many concerts that take place.

In America the prohibition was ruining the wine industry so in response to this, a frustrated Philip and Jocelyn Wagner sowed the seeds of their very own grapevine and began to sell cuttings throughout the country. Shortly after, they officially established a commercial winery in 1945 which they had up until 1980. The Deford family then took over the vineyard and cultivated it on another farmland called Long Green.

Highly knowledgeable guides will take you on a tour of the vineyard and surrounding estate. Depending on what time of year you visit, you can witness either pruning, leaf management or harvesting. Leaving the vineyards, you then head over to a large barn where you can get a great view of the actual winemaking process. Discover how Boordy's 3 unique lines of wine are made there. Finally the favourite part for most, the wine tasting room! Here you can savour the locally produced wines and if you like, pop over to the shop and purchase yourself a bottle of Shiraz, Chardonnay or Champagne from the Landmark Series.

Boordy Vineyards is situated in Long Green Valley, Baltimore County, just a 30-minute drive northeast from Baltimore city centre. Admission is free, however you will have to pay a fee if you wish to participate in wine tasting. Tours take place each afternoon and you don’t need to book if you have less than 10 people in your group. The vineyard is open every day apart from Sunday mornings and is closed for the bigger national public holidays. Check the website for current details.
