The Blanton Museum of Art houses more than 17,000 pieces in its extensive collection. Situated on the University of Texas campus, the museum spans 11,600 square metres and was voted the best museum in Austin in 2012 by the readers of the Austin Chronicle. Heralded as “an essential US art destination” by the newspaper, this intimate museum attracts not only art aficionados, but also anyone who has an eye for beautiful objects.
Set aside a few hours to explore the museum. Begin with its notable collection of Latin American art, where you can admire one of the oldest and most comprehensive collections in the country, with more than 2,000 works from 600 different Caribbean and South American artists. There is also some great European artwork, mostly from the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods. Explore North American art from 1875 to today, including prints, paintings and new media works. Appreciate classic realist paintings and more urban prints like those of Roy Lichtenstein.
For more contemporary styles, have a look at some of the video and installation art. The museum website contains a wealth of details on its special rotating exhibition programmes.
You can also join in on a tour of the collection and specific exhibitions, which is included in the admission price. Check ahead on the museum’s website for the tour schedule. There are many other public programmes, from themed tours, to lectures and artist talks, so do look up the current schedule of events on the website before your visit.
