Birch Aquarium showing marine life

A popular attraction taking you deep into the Pacific waters, this aquarium dates back over 100 years and houses marine life from 60 different habitats.

Spanning just under 6000 square metres, Birch Aquarium is a modest and intimate attraction that will bring you close to the marine life that lives on the Pacific coast. It contains species from dozens of different habitats, many of which can be touched by visitors.

Dating back to 1903, the aquarium is linked to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Research. That makes it a highly educational attraction which will give you a much greater insight into the marine life that lurks in the waters in this part of the world. It also offers plenty of entertainment, with daily feedings as well as the Kelp Forest Dive Show for you to watch and enjoy.

Visit the Tropical Seas Gallery too, where you’ll see a dazzling array of creatures, from lionfish and anemones to nautilus and giant clams. Here you can find out more about coral, and even learn about its capacity to produce chemicals that researchers are using to try and find new ways to cure medical problems.

There is so much hands-on fun too, with interactive exhibits like the Tide Pool Plaza, where you can touch the sea cucumbers and other creatures. Learn about the environment of the seas too, especially at the Feeling the Heat and the Boundless Energy exhibits, which will show you all about the impact of the oceans on global temperatures and energy independence.

Make sure you don’t leave before you’ve visited the back patio for an extraordinary view across the ocean. Visit in the summer and you will have the chance to see a concert from the Green Flash series, held up on the deck.

It’s easy to reach Birch Aquarium by public transport, though if you’re driving you can take advantage of up to three hours’ free parking. It rarely gets overcrowded, but school trips regularly come here so coming early is advisable to avoid queues. The aquarium is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.
