Bijarim Forest

This vast nutmeg forest with specimens dating back over eight centuries is the ideal spot for a peaceful walk surrounded by nature.

A short distance from Jeju City lies Bijarim Forest, an oasis of natural tranquillity shaded by some of the island’s oldest evergreens. This nutmeg forest is the largest in the world, comprising over 2,800 trees, most of which are between 500 and 800 years old. A walk through the fragrant forest will reward your senses and rejuvenate your spirits.

In spring, the ancient trees are transformed by brilliant red nutmeg blossoms, while the summer sun brings out the sweet smells of the bark. In autumn when the fruit falls you can pluck nutmegs from the ground, while in winter the branches of these evergreens provide leafy protection from the elements. There are around five kilometres of well-maintained paths to help you explore the forest the complete walk takes around two hours, but you can easily spend much longer in this picturesque natural park.

As you walk, try to spot all the different varieties of plant and flower that thrive in this habitat. Look out for the exotic, many-hued orchids underfoot and rare parasitic plants clinging to the tree trunks and branches. In spring, azaleas bring a riot of colour, and in autumn, the forest glows with the reds, golds and russets of maples, making visitors reach for their cameras in open-mouthed delight.

Be sure to leave time on your walk to admire the vast New Millennium Nutmeg, one of the oldest nutmeg trees in the world, standing at 25 metres high with a 6-metre girth and a canopy of over 15 metres. The tree holds special significance for the local islanders, who believe that, while it continues to survive, the spirit of the Korean people will remain strong.

To reach Bijaram Forest, take the Donghae line from Jeju City station to Sewha-ri, then catch a shuttle bus to the forest. The forest is open every day throughout the year with shorter opening times in winter. There is a small admission charge.
