Bhimtal is a scenic hillside town set around the tranquil waters of Bhimtal Lake. It’s where you can enjoy adventure sports, explore nature trails and indulge in a traditional high tea at waterfront restaurants. Bhimtal sits in the northern state of Uttarakhand and is encompassed by undulating green countryside and the Kumaon Himalayas. The town takes its name from Bhima, a central figure in the mythological Indian war of Mahabharata.
Bhimtal Lake is the town’s main attraction. A great way to discover it is by renting a rowboat or paddleboat. Marvel at the views of the surrounding hills as you glide across the calm water. Spot colorful aquatic life at the Aquarium, located on a small island in the heart of the lake. Ensure you purchase tickets for the aquarium at the boating docks.
Follow the trail that winds around the lake and passes attractions such as the Victoria Dam and attractive 17th-century Bhimeshwar Temple. Spot some of the 200 bird species that inhabit the forested hills and admire the terraced flower gardens. Find a varied collection of waterfront restaurants, accommodation and tourism offices offering mountain-biking and horse-riding excursions. Sit on the deck of the Fisherman’s Lodge and order a high tea of homemade cakes, jams and fragrant teas.
Bhimtal’s town center spreads back from the lake’s northern shores. Shop for Indian handicrafts, jewelry and textiles at the market stalls on Mall Road. Check out the exhibitions of folk art at the Folk Cultural Museum. Visit Fredy’s Bungalow, a colonial-style hotel home to an interesting butterfly museum. From here a mountain path leads to a ridge and superb views of the Sattal, a town interspersed by seven freshwater lakes.
Bhimtal is a 6-hour drive from New Delhi. Reach Bhimtal via public buses or hire a private driver. You can visit Bhimtal year-round. Spring offers mild temperatures and sunny days, while the monsoon season in summer creates a breathtaking green landscape. The cold winter months bring glimpses of the snow-peaked Himalayas.
