Art enthusiasts set up a foundation to collect modernist pieces in the 1980s. Now, a large complex with a scenic garden hosts the inspiring collection.

The Beyeler Foundation is a gallery of 200 classic modernist works of art that once belonged to a pair of dealers. The site includes a building of modern design with a glass roof, a Baroque villa and a charming garden. Relax in the tranquil environment of the museum and scrutinize the works of past masters.

Peruse paintings and sculptures that were crafted over the last 100 years from all over the world. Most of the pieces are from the same time period, but they display an eclectic range of form and theme. Marvel at sculptures and other objects from Africa, Australia and other areas. Browse temporary exhibits on a range of themes, including celebrated maestros of modern art.

Admire the modern look of the main building, constructed by architect Renzo Piano, who had a large influence in Paris. Note the glass ceiling that allows the changing hues of the sun’s light to affect the artworks. Admire pieces by modernist legends, such as Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse. The entire museum is on one level to correspond with the wishes of Ernst Beyeler, one of the founders.

See the pretty pond on the south side of the museum building. Special exhibitions take place in the garden and Berower Park, next to the complex. Sit in the shade of one of the many trees with a book or simply your thoughts about the museum’s inspiring works.

Although the foundation started in the 1980s, the museum itself first opened in 1997. It is open to the public daily, including Sundays and public holidays, from morning until early evening. On Wednesdays, it stays open a little later. There is a small admission fee with discounts for groups and children.

Take a shuttle bus from the city center to the Beyeler Foundation, which is near the German border in the northeast part of the city. The 4-mile (6.7-kilometer) journey should take about 25 minutes by bus or taxi. You can also take a tram to the Riehen stop near to the museum.
