It was a lovely stay.
1. Cozy experience, great people, away from the city hustle bustle.
2. Amazing head chef: He treated us like we are his family. We had specific dietary requirements (Indian vegetarian). He cooked special dishes for us in the breakfast buffet. The special meal charges were also super reasonable
3. Close to the Great Wall
4. The hotel is in a small village - head there if you would like leisurely walks and relaxation. Don't expect great amenities that a city hotel would offer. There is however a TV/video room, board game room, etc.
5.The starry sky is just awesome.
6. There is a Chinese hot pot restaurant near the hotel. They can do a lot of customized dishes for you if you can manage the language translation.

This was a big disappointment for us. The house is much too cold for winter, you can feel the cold coming off the walls. We went through half the firewood in a few hours, all huddling around the fireplace, and now all our coats smell like burned wood. We moved all the space heaters into the bedrooms and slept in hoodies and pants to get through the night. When they showed us to our room, they brought a picnic basket with breads and jams and yogurt. We asked about breakfast and they said here you are. So we had stale bread the next day and had to make our own coffee - it was too cold to eat yogurt. Then when we checked out, the same person who showed us our room said oh you can have brunch, it is free for you. I said why didn't you tell us yesterday, to which I received no response. At brunch there were hot eggs, bacon, and potatoes, which we would have appreciated, but we were so fed up with the place, we did not want to stay a minute longer. The house seemed nice enough, but it was freezing, and service was terrible, especially at $500. Definitely would NOT recommend.

Dear Anonymous Guest, Thank you for sharing your story on Expedia. My name is Jim Spear and I am the designer and owner of the Brickyard and our Homes. I checked with our onsite team who prepared carefully for your stay in the Stone Forest home and hosted you during your stay. We are very sorry that you neglected to bring passports for two of the people in your party and that we had to ask you to report personally to the local police station to obtain permission to stay without identification. This is a requirement of Chinese law and we must follow the rules in order to avoid fines and be able to stay in business. We do advise the requirement for passports on our website and in all confirmation notices. I think that the police excursion on arrival about which you seemed very upset must have colored your entire experience. We do have an overall outstanding reputation for our facilities, amenities, food, and service and we will trust travelers to put your review in perspective. I am truly sorry that we were not able to please you and wish you happier travels in the future. Kind regards.

Highlight of our trip!
Posted 1 Sep 2019 on HotelsBeautiful property, amazing service!
Gorgeous views of the surrounding area and Great Wall. Chef prepared a special meal for our family...so delicious! We arranged for private car service from Beijing thru Brickyard and it was perfect. Stayed only one night but it was the highlight of our 10 days in China!

A Unique Experience
Posted 16 Jul 2019 on HotelsThe Brickyard Retreat is certainly unique. It is family owned and operated and maintains that authentic feel. This also means it does not necessarily have all of the amenities and high level service one might expect.
The location is great and very convenient for visiting the Great Wall.
The restaurant and overall food offering was less than stellar and in fact, not very good.
I would stay here again because it is such a lovely setting but I would come with a plan to experience the local restaurants and scene around the village.

Excellent
Posted 5 Jul 2019 on HotelsWe stayed dry Grandma's Place and loved it. Staying in Mutianyu is perfect to beat the crowds coming in from Beijing on the Great Wall, and the Brickyard was the perfect place to stay
