Battery Park

In the shadow of a momentous fortress lies this charming coastal park, where the fading tracks of battery artilleries hint at its military past.

Across the water from an imposing military fortification, Battery Park is a surprising gem in the corner of Vaxholm Island. Quaint buildings of traditional Swedish design surround the park, which provides scenic views of the waves lapping the island. Enjoy the absolute serenity in this leafy haven, with the fortress and ruins the sole reminders of more chaotic times.

Admire the impressive turrets and thick walls of the fort, which enabled the island to defend itself in the late 1800s. Other versions of protective battlements existed as early as the 1500s. The importance of this fortified location continued through World War II, when mines were placed in the strait to prevent enemy access to Stockholm by water.

Stroll through this green park, passing an embedded bunker and additional tracks made by long-gone artillery guns. Bring food and drink for your family to have a picnic along the grassy coastline. While you eat, the sea and the neighboring islands of Stegesund, Edholma and Rindö serve as a varied and picturesque backdrop.

Enjoy the views of the spectacular fortress, which is separated from the park by a stretch of water. Go for a walk on a neighboring beach and take a dip in a swimming zone on a warm summer day.

Take a ferry to the island and visit the Vaxholm Fortress Museum to learn more about the five centuries of history here. Part of the castle now serves as a bed and breakfast, with café, bistro and themed activities. Join a guided tour during the summer.

Battery Park is in the northeastern corner of Vaxholm Island, one of the eastern islands of Stockholm. Ride a bus to the Vaxholm Söderhamnsplan and walk north for about 5 minutes to get here.

While on the island, visit Kolerakyrkogården, the Vaxholms Kanotsällskap canoe club and the Vaxholms Kyrka parish church.
