Bastion of Parsano

Visit one of Sorrento’s most significant historical sites and discover how this ancient fortification has protected the city down through the centuries.

Of all the historical and cultural attractions in Sorrento, the Bastion of Parsano is the one that has really stood the test of time. One of the last tangible remnants of the ancient wall that protected the city throughout the centuries, this extraordinary stronghold attracts thousands of visitors every year and simply must be at the top of any Sorrento to-do list.

Dating back to the 4th century BC, the fortification was established to protect the citizens of the city from plundering pirates and other unsavoury visitors. And so far, it’s done a pretty good job.

Easily reached on foot, the entrance to the bastion is off Via Sersale, which is not far from Sorrento’s central square, Piazza Tasso. Before you set off exploring the bastion, it’s worth getting a free guidebook from one of the attendants. This will give you a good overview of the history of the walls and the part they played in defending the city from marauders, including an ill-fated Saracen invasion in the 16th century.

Historically, municipal Sorrento has been an architectural hybrid of Greek and Roman styles and evidence of this can be seen at the bastion itself. Pause at the metal grate near the entrance and take a moment to look down at the ruins of the original Greek wall that lies alongside Roman remains. These were excavated in 1921 and are some of the last surviving vestiges of the original structure. As you make your way around the archways and stone staircases, note the thickness of the stone and the orderly rows of limestone that formed this solid defence system.

Bear in mind that the bastion is only open mid-mornings and evenings. So if you’re not an early bird, head there at night when the ancient walls are beautifully lit up.

This is a truly magnificent structure of outstanding historical significance. Historians, archaeologists, sightseers and casual visitors alike will all find something of interest at this site. And the best part of this unique Sorrento attraction? It’s completely free, leaving you with extra cash in your wallet to splurge as you see fit!
