Explore an abandoned fort built during the German occupation of Denmark or visit a historic Danish manor, both part of this history museum in North Jutland.

Watch the fascinating history of the North Jutland region unfold before your eyes as you explore historic farmhouses, German forts and a beautiful Danish manor at the Nordjyllands Kystmuseum (North Jutland Coastal Museum).

The Nordjyllands Kystmuseum brings together three of the region’s local history museums and is a great way to discover local architecture and traditions. Learn about the seafaring culture that has long been central to Denmark at the Skagen Town and Regional Museum. See how a market town developed at the Saeby farmhouse or learn about the events of the German occupation of the country at the Bangsbo Museum.

Look through the materials used by children at school in the 19th century or wander the stunning grounds of the Saeby farmstead at the Saeby Museum. Housed within the walls of a traditional coastal farmhouse, the museum maps out the growth of the Skagen township. Climb through the hulls of the ships that were once the lifeblood of the region. At the nearby Skagen Town and Regional Museum, seewhat fisherman once had to endure in order to feed their families.

The occupation of Denmark by German forces during the 1940s is central to the identity of the region. At the Bangsbo Museum, take a guided tour of the fort built during World War II and then used throughout the Cold War. Built at the base of Pikkerbakken Hill, the fort features large canons once used on a Danish artillery ship. Climb the hill for some of the best views of the coast and the flat landscape. Despite being only 260 feet (80 meters) high, Pikkerbakken Hill is one of the highest points in Northern Jutland and makes for a great photograph.

The three museums are located in the towns of Skagen, Fredrickshavn and Saeby and are approximately 31 miles (50 kilometers) apart. While a bus route connects the three towns, the museums are best reached with a car and free parking is available at all locations. One ticket offers entrance to all three museums.
