Learn about the military history of the town and its island through these fascinating displays.
Get a closer look at the bombs, pistols and swords among the weapons in the exhibits. Exhibits explain a variety of subjects including the evolution of gunpowder and the changing faces of the ramparts.
Chat with staff about the displays and pick up some of the historic lances and halberd pole weapons. Let your kids touch replica weapons, try on the armor and helmets and attempt to lift cannonballs.
Walk around the terrace of the bulwark and spot the cannons that face out toward the city. From the top of the bastion, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the Old Town district and the dark green mountains forming a scenic backdrop. Bring binoculars and cameras to take advantage of this panoramic vantage point.
Note that the bastion’s museum, which is open to the public from spring through fall, was initiated in 2008. Visit from morning until afternoon on Tuesday through Sunday. In winter, the site opens only for group viewings organized by phone or email.
