Explore the splendid building where the Austrian parliament has convened since the time of the 19th century emperor Franz Joseph.

The Austrian Parliament Building is one of the most imposing buildings on the Ringstraße, however, there is far more to admire than just its size and beauty. Architect Baron Theophil Hansen designed the building in the Greek Revival style. The columns, statues and chambers within the building make it a great place to discover some of Austria’s finest civic architecture and interior design.

Start your visit by admiring the famous Pallas Athena fountain outside. This too was designed by Hansen and features the goddess Athena flanked by allegorical statues of the regions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. While outside, pause to admire the building’s exterior and you will see the more than 100 statues that decorate it, including four large chariots on the roof.

Taking a guided tour is advisable if you wish to fully appreciate the Parliament Building. Enter the Hall of Pillars with its 24 giant marble pillars and polished marble floor. Discover the former Imperial House of Representatives, built to resemble a 400-seat Greek theater.Other areas include libraries, bars and the Chamber of the National Council. Make sure you admire the furniture and artwork, as well as the architecture, as it was all chosen by Hansen to complement the overall design.

On days when Parliament is in session you can still enter the visitor center where free interactive stations explain Austria’s system of government. The adjoining café makes for a lovely spot from which to view the other Ringstraße buildings. Popular with photographers, the Parliament Building looks especially impressive in the soft light of morning, and when lit at night.

The Austrian Parliament Building is located on the Ringstraße in central Vienna. Tours are run every day throughout the day, except Sundays, for a small charge. Buses and trams stop regularly nearby.
