The Arena della Stretto open-air theater has a dramatic setting on Reggio di Calabria’s waterfront, overlooking the sparkling Strait of Messina. Book tickets for a performance and arrive early to soak up the panoramic views, which on a clear day, extend all the way to Sicily. Try to spot the smoldering tip of Mount Etna in the distance.
The arena, which is officially known as L’Anfiteatro Senatore Ciccio Franco, takes its name from a local 20th-century senator and political activist. The arena was built on the site of the old Porto Salvo pier, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1908. Look for the statue of Athena, part of a monument dedicated to the former King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III, behind the stage. This monument once stood on the Porto Salvo pier.
Admire the theater’s design. Like the ancient amphitheaters built by the Romans and the Greeks, it has a semicircular form, with the sea serving as a natural backdrop to the stage. Because of its curved shape and tiered seating, all seats provide good views of the stage.
Attend a film screening, a play or a music performance at the theater. Come a few minutes before the performance is due to start to allow yourself time to thoroughly enjoy the views. Watch as the color of the sky and sea behind the stage begins to change as day turns to night. Evening performances often coincide with sunset. By the time the final scene takes place, audience members may be able to see stars shining overhead.
Arena dello Stretto is located on the Lungomare Falcomatà seafront promenade. Several festivals, including the Reggio Calabria Film Fest and the Mediterraneo Dance Festival are held at the venue. If you want to see a show at the theater, time your visit for summer. As it is an open-air venue, most performances take place during warm summer evenings. Ticket prices vary depending on the event being staged.
