Get away from your worries at tranquil Anmok Beach. It is a great place to swim in summer and walk in any season. Even on very warm days it is rarely very busy. Dine on tasty seafood straight from the ocean, use the showers and other well-maintained facilities and get an energy boost at one of the many little cafés along Coffee Street.
Anmok Beach is about 1,600 feet (500 meters) long. Join locals and tourists who consider this one of their favorite spots in the quiet city of Gangneung. Do some swimming in the calm waters or catch up on some reading on the beach. Come on a weekday morning to enjoy sharing the beach with only a small number of other visitors. Bring a camera to take photos against the idyllic backdrop of the clear blue waters.
Make sure you stop at the cafés along Gangneung Coffee Street, which runs parallel to the ocean. South Korea has a very strong café culture and this is the ideal place to be part of it. Multiple independent coffee shops, as well as a few chains, line this street. Sip coffee in quirky and unique surroundings as you look out across the beach. You may want to catch one of the events held here throughout the year, such as the annual coffee festival.
Stay at Anmok Beach until lunchtime and sample some of the treats sold at the local seafood houses. Feast on everything from squid and octopus to fresh seaweed, all sourced just off the coast.
Get to Anmok Beach from Seoul by taking a bus to Gangneung Express Bus Terminal and then catching a taxi to the ocean. The total journey takes less than 3 hours. Free parking is also available nearby. Though the beach is not yet heavily developed, it does offer good facilities such as showers and restrooms, as well as beach umbrellas and inflatable tubes for rent. Enjoy this perfect no-fuss daytrip destination.
