Journey back to the Roman era at the Ancient Bath House of Nazareth. Fed by nearby Mary’s Well, this public bath house was used by residents of Nazareth during the time of Jesus and is believed to have been frequented by the Virgin Mary. Learn about the fascinating history of the Ancient Bath House of Nazareth on a tour of its archaeological remains. Pick up keepsakes at an artisan’s store located in the same building.

A local couple unearthed the bath house in 1993 while carrying out renovations on a property they planned to turn into a shop. They discovered clay pipes embedded in a wall similar to those visible at Roman baths in Pompeii. Further digging revealed an archway, which led to a tunnel and a hypocaust. Originally said to be a Turkish hammam, archaeologists later dated it at around 2,000 years old.

Tours provide a detailed history of the site from its finding to its plans for the future. Walk through the narrow tunnels, touch the huge stone bricks and see remnants of a marble floor. Peak inside the caldarium (hot room) and hypocaust. Browse examples of coins and pottery from the Hellenistic period and see evidence of a Roman road.

Coffee and candy are served during the tour in a hall of the bath house. Take a moment to reflect and imagine a time when important Roman figures and biblical characters possibly bathed here. After the tour, browse the artisanal items on display in the gift shop. There’s everything from contemporary jewelry pieces to handbags and embroidery to choose from.

The attraction stands in a vibrant square in Nazareth’s Old City. Major city landmarks, such as the Basilica of the Annunciation and Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, are a short walk away.

The Ancient Bath House of Nazareth and gift shop are open from Monday to Saturday. Advanced bookings are advisable for groups of more than four visitors. The tour fee is put toward the continued preservation and investigation of the site.
