Attend festivals near the gazebo, study the museum displays and appreciate the views of the hilly surroundings from a historic plaza named for an inspiring teacher.

As one of the principal plazas in Cabo San Lucas, the Amelia Wilkes Square is known for its stunning views and traditional setting. A charming arched gazebo stands alongside intriguing works of art and botanical displays. Sit with your family on an elegant white bench in this peaceful plaza and watch people go by.

In the northwestern corner of the square stands the Museum of Natural History of Cabo San Lucas. Inspect the exhibits on paleontology, geology and the development of humans in the region. Learn about the migration of whales and dolphins and the conservation of sea turtles.

Head to the southern end of the plaza for the 18th-century San Lucas Evangelist Catholic Church, which has an arched white exterior. Attend a bilingual Mass at noon on any Sunday.

Meet your friends in the heart of the plaza, which is a popular gathering point. Enjoy the vista of the surrounding hills and palm trees. The gazebo is often at the heart of events and festivals held here. Come to the square at night to see the structure draped in colorful lights.

Head down the adjacent streets for the range of restaurants serving Mexican and international cuisine. Try local Choyera food, which has a focus on seafood, cold soups and tortillas.

The square’s name is a tribute to Professor Amelia Wilkes Ceseña, a beloved teacher who helped to transform local society. See the plaque erected in 1992, just 3 years after her death. It features an outline of the teacher’s head.

Find Amelia Wilkes Square a little inland from the docks in the central district of Cabo San Lucas. Visit other nearby sights, such as the Pabellón cultural center, the Playwin Casino and the Centro Judío de Cabo. The plaza is accessible to the public at all times, while the history museum opens Tuesday through Saturday from morning until afternoon.
