Altiplanic Lagoons

Marvel at the contrasting landscapes of two lagoons set in a salt flat and framed by snow-capped mountain peaks and volcanoes.

Journey into the central Andes to discover the otherworldly scenery and exotic wildlife of the Altiplanic Lagoons (Lagunas Altiplanicas). Be awed by the magnificent surroundings, which are considered sacred by native tribes and revered by photography enthusiasts. Appreciate the eerie silence, vivid colors and varied flora and fauna. The Altiplanic Lagoons form part of Los Flamencos National Reserve, an area of seven geographically and ecologically different zones.

There are two lagoons to discover, the larger, heart-shaped Miscanti Lake and the smaller Miñiques Lake. They sit at a height of over 13,100 feet (4,000 meters) in the Altiplano of northern Chile and are bordered by salt flats. Originally one body of water, the two lakes are now separated by a barren section of desert, rocks and wild grass. Common belief is that lava flow from a volcanic eruption during the Ice Age caused the separation.

Marked trails skirt the western shores of the lakes. Pause to appreciate the views of the vast expanses of piercing-blue water and brilliant white shoreline. Lookouts at the southern tip of Miscanti Lake and above the northern edge of Miñiques Lake present some of the best photo opportunities. Bring lunch and stop to enjoy one of the most picturesque picnics of your lifetime.

Spot flocks of elegant flamingos drinking water from the lakes in addition to the Andean fox, crested duck, eagles and owls. Mountainous snow-covered landscapes rise up from all sides. To the north is 18,445-feet (5,622-meter) tall Cerro Miscanti and to the south is 19,390-feet (5,910-meter) tall Volcán Miñiques. On clear and sunny days you can watch them create mirror images in the tranquil waters.

You’ll find the lakes located about a 90-minute drive south of San Pedro de Atacama. Travel agencies operate day tours from the town. Some tours include visits to the pretty villages of Toconao and Socaire. Parking is available at the lakes if you are arriving by car.

During the summer months temperatures are high at the Altiplanic Lagoons so it’s advisable to visit in the morning. Pack plenty of water and wear comfortable walking shoes. There is a fee to enter Los Flamencos National Park.
